Little Herring Pond

About this Location

Little Herring Pond is a 90-acre, shallow natural Great Pond. The bottom is composed of gravel and muck. The pond is fed by groundwater (including springs at the northern end) and runoff and feeds into Great Herring Pond. The ponds 2.3 miles of shoreline are only lightly developed with houses and cranberry bogs.

Little Herring Pond is located in South Plymouth, north of Great Herring Pond and just west of Long Pond Road. Little Herring Pond is an enlarged great pond and public access is a Plymouth County right-of-way through the David E. Alper Nature Preserve, located off Little Herring Pond Road, which is off of Carters Bridge Road.

Notable Trails

The preserve is located at the end of Little Herring Pond Road. The main trail is a cart path, suitable for hiking and cross-country skiing. Toward the end, there is a fork. Go right to complete the Plant ID Trail (0.4 miles total). Go left for a short loop with views of Triangle Pond.

Also, near the beginning of the trail, look for a 0.33-mile loop that extends downhill toward Little Herring Pond. At the end, there is an excellent view of the pond, as well as an old dam at the outlet to Carter’s Brook. This would be a good place to spot herring during their spring migration!
