Tips for Birding

The views to the north (towards Bixby Creek bridge) and to the south (towards Pt. Sur) are incredible, but in the summer there is a dense Common Murre colony on Hurricane Pt. Rock, just offshore towards the northwest. You can see the colony with binoculars on the lower left-hand side of the Rock, but a scope is also helpful. Watch also, in summer, for Pigeon Guillemots on the ocean around the Rock.

Birds of Interest

The large Common Murre breeding colony and Pigeon Guillemot in spring/summer. A pair of Peregrine are often resident overhead or sitting on adjacent cliff-faces.

In the summers of 1996 & 1997, a small colony of Ashy Storm-Petrel bred on Hurricane Pt. Rock (and Castle Rock). These are the only breeding efforts by this species in Monterey County. Because of the presence of predatory Western Gulls, these seabirds would return and leave their breeding burrows only at night, and disperse far out of sea, away from gulls. You will not see any during the day. In addition, in 1980, a pair of Tufted Puffin was seen from a boat survey, and were suspected of breeding. There are no documented records of any Tufted Puffin seen from shore in this area.

About this Location

Two miles south of the world-famous Bixby Creek bridge along Highway 1 is a wide overlook on the ocean side called Hurricane Point overlook/viewpoint.  Although Highway 1 is winding as one drives south and up to Hurricane Point, there is parking from a dozen or more cars at the viewpoint pull-out on the right as Highway 1 turns left and downhill towards the Little Sur River.  It can be very cold or windy, or both, here. Please use care when walking towards the cliff. There are huge boulders separating the parking area from the overlook to help steady observers.
