Tips for Birding

This Hotspot covers the southern coastal portion of Garrapata State Park. Although the map on this page does show (in green) that Garrapata State Park extends south to the Garrapata Creek bridge, "google" maps and many other maps don't show this extension of this State Park, which was an addition in 1989. The Hotspot runs along the western side of Highway 1 from the first dirt pull-out south of Soberanes Point (as its north boundary), and thereafter southwards includes the Marine Pollution Studies Lab (no public access except on invitation), the Granite Canyon bridge, and then south, with many pull-outs on the west side of Highway 1, to the Garrapata Creek mouth bridge, and to the paved "vista point" pull-out just south of that. This is 2.5 miles of coastline.

The Hotspot includes the popular Calla Lily Valley trail to the beach (at the Doud Creek mouth), the long sandy beach (sometimes called "Garrapata Beach") and the portion of the old Doud Ranch east of Highway 1 which is not open to the public but is viewable from the road.

Birds of Interest

The rocky shoreline has resident Black Oystercatcher. Just offshore, flocks of Surf Scoter winter (and some may even summer) that have attracted less common ducks, including Harlequin Duck (rare). Coastal willow patches may produce migrant passerines in spring and fall.

About this Location

The only restroom in this Hotspot is a mobile "pit toilet" parked west of Highway 1 in a pull-out just south of Granite Canyon bridge.
