About this Location

The 9th Street Dam Outflow is a site in Alpena along the Sunrise Coast Birding Trail.

Park behind Clem's Bait Shop on 9th Street and walk across the bridge or down the bike path to view the River.

This site is best in the winter because the outflow of the dam keeps the Thunder Bay River from freezing most years. It is a congregating point for Mergansers, Shovelers, Teal, Oldsquaw, Bufflehead, Goldeneye, and many varieties of Ducks. Rare Harlequin Ducks were spotted at this location. Eagles, Herons, Cormorants, Hawks, and a black Mink worked the shoreline this past winter (2010).

The walking trail/bike bath is owned by the City of Alpena and is open to the public. Anglers at the Dam often compete with the birds!
