The East Texas Conservation Center began as the TPWD Jasper Fish hatchery, which was placed into operation in 1932 and operated continuously as a fish hatchery until the transition of the facility to the Wildlife Division in April of 2012.

When the transition to the Wildlife Division was completed, the emphasis of the property, newly named the East Texas Conservation Center, became wildlife management, habitat management, demonstration, and outreach. As such, a transitional plan is being developed for the operation of the facility. One component of the transition is to change the operation of the fish rearing ponds into moist soil management units for a multitude of reasons. The TPWD District 6 office is now at this facility and hosts various meetings.
