Peterborough--Stenson Park

Peterborough--Stenson Park

Tips for Birding

Birding is best during migration. Walk the periphery of the pond and the trails through the deciduous woodlot.

Birds of Interest

The stormwater pond has attracted a variety of waterfowl over the years and small numbers of shorebirds may be encountered during the latter half of May. The willow-dogwood thickets around the periphery of the stormwater pond can be productive for passerines during migration, often late into the fall as evidenced by a November 2016 record of White-eyed Vireo, establishing the county’s sixth record.

About this Location

Stenson Park is a 4 ha municipal park comprised of manicured lawns with a playground, a 1.5 ha remnant sugar maple-beech-oak woodlot and a stormwater retention pond just under 1 ha in extent. Access is from Waddell Ave in the north, Pinewood Dr to the east or Stenson Blvd to the south. Parking (max. 3 h) is streetside on all these roadways.

Notable Trails

There are well-maintained limestone screening footpaths leading north from Stenson Blvd and nearly encircling the pond; unmaintained footpaths lead through the deciduous woodlot.
