Tips for Birding

Sacahuistale Flats is a place to stop, look and listen for Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls.

State Highway 186 is a busy and noisy road. So any place you find to pull completely off the highway (a gate entrance, for example) is welcome.

Starting late in the day in the January to March time frame, drive SH 186 and, when you stop, listen for the repetitive "tooting" of the owl.

Birds of Interest

Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Common Paraque, Great Horned Owl.

Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls are found in far south Texas or in Arizona.

About this Location

A recommendation is to stop all along State Highway 186 (any place there is a gate with a driveway entrance where you could get a good distance away from the highway) to look for South Texas Thorn-Scrub species.

But the main draw to this area is to be able to add a Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl to your Texas or US/ABA list.
