Tips for Birding

This is roadside birding, both from the car and while walking. There is plenty of room to pull off the side of the road, which is not a very busy road once you are past the office buildings. Please be careful in the hot dry summers however not to start a grass fire with your vehicle. You might stop once or twice before you get to the bridge to stop and listen for birds.

Be sure to stop at the bridge to look for Rock, Canyon, Bewick's and Carolina Wrens. Rufous-crowned Sparrows can be found near the bridge.

After you cross the bridge, if you take rights at every fork in the road you will continue all the way to the end of Max Starcke Road which is past the transformer station, down a very steep hill to the dead end just before the fishing camp called The Ramp.

At the first fork in the road, you can go left to the entrance gate of the station. On the map diagram this is coded as a blue line. From this location you can see down below the dam that forms Lake Marble Falls. Downstream from the dam is the very far, far, far upper reaches of Lake Travis.

Back track to the main road and turn left. Drive past the second entrance gate and keep going when the road turns to gravel. Greater Roadrunners have been found on this stretch.

The road comes to a small sign that says "The Ramp" and makes a hard left turn. It is possible to take that turn and go all the way down the very steep incline to the "cut-de-sac" at the bottom. Along this section you may find Lesser Goldfinches, Northern Cardinals and Indian Peafowl (resident birds at The Ramp)

Birds of Interest

This is one of the most reliable locations in the county for Canyon and Rock Wrens. In fact, five different wrens can be found on this road in the wintertime.

About this Location

This spot might be best birded in the morning when the sun is at your back and below the cliff face. Otherwise, in the afternoons, you will be looking mostly into the sun as can be seen from the photos.

If you bird this location in the summer, late in the day Mexican Free-tailed Bats emerge from the mine entrance. It is quite the spectacle to watch wave after wave of bats emerge from the mine. Best place to watch is shortly after the road changes from "city" to "country."
