Tips for Birding

This is a really nice, large picnic area with walk-out access to the San Saba River.

You might start by parking at the far upper end of the picnic area, near the main entrance, to start checking the trees and the thick understory just outside the short, pretty and probably historic rock wall.

Walk down from this point slowly and quietly in hopes that you won't scare off any of the birds in the river.

Scan downriver from the "upper" parking area (near the covered picnic table) to try to spot any birds on the river before they spook and fly away.

Then continue down to the farthest end of the parking area where you can access some steps that will take you down to the river.

There does not appear to be any pathway along the river, though, so it might not be worth taking this extra step.

Birds of Interest

There have been occasional reports of Green-winged and Blue-winged Teal, Gadwall, American Wigeon and Canvasback!! Pied-bill Grebe, Great Blue Heron and Spotted Sandpiper have also been reported from this location. There is one report of a Green Kingfisher from this site as well as Belted Kingfisher.

Other birds of interest are Great Horned Owl, Chimney Swift, Bald Eagle, Osprey, Common Ground Dove, American Kestrel, woodpeckers, flycatchers and vireos.

Cliff and Cave Swallows may be found in the summer coming out from under the U.S. 87 bridge over the river and Summer Tanagers are present in the trees. Canyon Wren has been reported here.
