Peterborough--Television Road pond

Tips for Birding

Birding is from the gravel shoulder of Television Road. This site is worth checking any time during the ice-free period of the year, but is probably best in late summer through fall. A spotting scope isn't absolutely necessary, but is helpful for scanning the far edges of the pond.

Birds of Interest

Probably best known for waterfowl, including Trumpeter Swan and a variety of marsh birds (Pied-billed Grebe, rails, Marsh Wren, etc.). Dependent on water levels, a variety of shorebirds may occasionally be found from August through September. The site is probably best known for Great Egret, which occurs here with some regularity, particularly from late summer through September.

About this Location

Television Road pond is a discrete wetland nearly 2 ha in extent. It is part of the Meade Creek Wetland Complex and consists of a pond with numerous deadheads and partially submerged logs, rimmed by cattail marsh and willow-dominated shrub thicket swamp. Television Road is an extremely busy road and care should be taken to pull well onto the gravel road shoulder and to exit vehicles with caution.
