Hope Mill CA

Birds of Interest

Grassland birds (e.g., Eastern Meadowlark and Bobolink)

About this Location

The property is split into two parts by the Indian River.

The west/north side is an old day use area with a beach and now abandoned picnic shelters. It can be accessed by walking along the old road where Hope Mill Road makes a ninenty degree bend north of the bridge over the river.

The east/south side has a small parking area east of the bridge and provides access to the historic old mill site. See the Hope Mill website for more details about visiting the mill.

Notable Trails

North Side:

1) there is a trail that enters the old day-use area and then continues on following the river. A short loop at the far eastern end takes you up and over a drumlin and connects back to the trail (this loop is rather rustic and might be difficult to follow through some of the meadow areas).

2) Another trail goes north up onto a really big drumlin offering fantastic views of the river and beyond (looking south). This trail takes you through a low wetland area so you will generally need waterproof footwear. During very dry years or in the winter, you can walk this trail without special footwear.

South Side:

1) You can wander around the mill area including a picnic area.

2) A trail proceeds east through the old campground area. It forms a loop passing along the river and through a nice grasslands area.

Note: This property, it's being abused by snowmobiles and ATVs. Looking at it with satellite imagery, you can easily see the many ATV trails crisscrossing the grassland area on the south side.
