Northey's Bay Road, Woodview, Ontario
AllTrails Eels Creek to High Falls websiteFrom the parking area at the trailhead for the High Falls Trail a nice variety of species can be observed during the breeding season, The hike to High Falls can yield similar birds to nearby Petroglyphs PP and both winter finches and Black-backed Woodpecker are possibilities, especially in winter.
Breeding species regularly encountered in the general vicinity of the parking area include: Golden-crowned Kinglet, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Blue-headed Vireo, Purple Finch, American Redstart, Blackburnian, Black-throated Green, Black-throated Blue, Pine and Yellow-rumped warblers. Common Merganser (a regionally uncommon breeding species) regularly nests along the rocky shore of Eels Creek at this location, as does Spotted Sandpiper.
There is a small parking lot on the north side of Northey's Bay Road (CR 56) on the east side of Eel's Creek. The short access road to the parking area runs through a tallgrass prairie remnant along the crest of the slope. It's a popular spot for a picnic or to hike north to High Falls and can be quite busy and the parking lot full during the summer months. The road receives little or no winter maintenance and so may be impassable in winter, dependent on snow depths. There is no parking on Northey's Bay Road.
The High Falls trail is a 2.5 km straight line hike which requires you to double-back on your route to return (so a 5 km round trip). See the AllTrails website for a map and hike description.
