This beautiful river mouth and lagoon is privately owned, and not open to the public. Birders may view it from one dirt and several paved pull-outs on Highway 1 from bluffs overlooking the south side of the river. A scope is very helpful here, and in winter this is a regular location for Common Merganser, Common Goldeneye, Snowy Plover, and Peregrine Falcon; in some winters a single Barrow's Goldeneye may be present.
See prior discussion regarding birds at the lagoon. Passerine migrants are sometimes viewable from the footwalks alongside the traffic lanes over the Little Sur River where it is bridged by Highway 1, but be very aware of speeding traffic. It is not safe for children or disabled persons to use those narrow footwalks.
The Little Sur River mouth and riparian corridor along the Little Sur River are entirely in private property; the land is heavily fenced with barbed wire, and is regularly patrolled. In the 1980s, birders had limited access to the riparian corridor, and found many interesting passerine migrants, particularly in fall, but that access no longer exists.
