Tips for Birding

If you carefully keep your bird records by state, be aware of the location of the state line and use the appropriate eBird hotspots when you submit checklists. When submitting eBird observations at Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge, it is most helpful to start a new checklist for each hotspot within the refuge. The general hotspot is located in Alabama. Use this general hotspot when you have a checklist a birds seen in Alabama that includes multiple locations or if no other hotspot or personal location is appropriate for your sightings.

There are varied areas for viewing so many different types of birds may be present. In places you can view open water with marshy edges, swampy areas with trees, brambles and trees.

Always observe wildlife from a safe distance and be aware of where you are putting your feet and hands. Alligators, Venomous snakes and arthropods, as well as poisonous plants, are found on the refuge. To make your trip more enjoyable, you may want to bring:

  • Sunglasses
  • Bug Spray
  • Water Bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Comfortable shoes for walking/hiking

Birds of Interest

Watch for barn owls near the two unused silos. Breeding herons can be found near one of the pump houses.

About Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge

See all hotspots at Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge

Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1964, with community support and in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to provide habitat for wintering waterfowl and other migratory and resident wildlife.

Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge lies within the historical range of the longleaf pine/wiregrass ecosystem and contains remnant longleaf pine stands. Refuge wetlands, croplands, woodlands, old fields, grasslands, and open water create a mosaic of wildlife-rich habitats that support almost 300 species of birds, 40 species of mammals, and many amphibians, reptiles, and fish.

The main unit of the 11,184-acre refuge is located about 7 miles north of the city of Eufaula, Alabama, along both banks of the Chattahoochee River in southeast Alabama and southwest Georgia.

The refuge headquarters is located eight miles north of Eufaula, Alabama, approximately two miles east of US-431 on AL-165. The office is staffed from 8 am to 4:30 pm (central time), Monday through Friday. The refuge is open daily during daylight hours.
