SW Snyder Nature Trail

Tips for Birding

One of the best spots to bird within this hotspot is a lookout over the small pond. There are several large rocks and a very short but steep trail down to the water. There usually isn't too much waterfowl activity here, although Green-winged Teal, Blue-winged Teal, Buffleheads, and Gadwall have been spotted over the years. Great Blue Herons can be seen regularly, and a Green Heron has been recorded as well.

Birds of Interest

  • Buffleheads on the pond in fall, winter, and spring. *A very quiet approach from the smaller side trail is recommended!
  • American Pipits, rather infrequent, but a treat to see.
  • Mountain Bluebirds can be seen in small groups from the main trail.
  • "Field hawks" (local birder code for any unidentified hawk) are easy to see.

About this Location

A pump track and bathrooms are being constructed near the entrance. There is a large gravel parking lot and the whole property is fenced in with barbed wire. Decent bird activity can be seen from inside the car in the parking lot. There are a few benches along the gravel trail, but the birding from the benches isn't great due to the fact that the benches are out in the open.

Notable Trails

The most prominent trail is a wide gravel loop about 3/4 of a mile long that encircles the pond. It is the most suitable for bikers, walkers, and birders.

Another great trail is the 3.1-mile dirt track through mesquite brush and cactus patches. It follows the fence line for most of the way and is fairly easy. New paths are under construction.
