This may be the best site in the state (as of 2007) to find remnant population of Ruffed Grouse. Spring, early summer and early autumn visits should produce good mix of expected east central Missouri species of both early and late successional forest.
Directions: From I-70, Exit 188 (Pendleton). To access the west side, go about 5 miles south on Rt. B; to reach the east side, go about 5 miles south on Rt. EE.
Mostly oak-hickory forest with small, scattered glades, this area is being managed to provide habitat for Ruffed Grouse. Clearing, edge feathering and other forest management techniques to favor grouse also favor songbirds such as Blue-winged Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, and White-eyed Vireo. A small pond is near the southmost west side parking area.
Two trails, a 1.3 mile nature trail, and a 5.8 multi-use trail (open from the end of spring turkey season to the beginning of fall turkey season) provide good access to the interior. Trails may be reached from the two southern-most parking areas on the east, or from the two on the west side. Old gravel roads extending from the trails lead to clay pits. A half-mile old gravel road runs from the northern lot on the east side.
