Tips for Birding

The pond is best viewed from the southern edge. A wide shoulder on the side of Love Road makes for easy parking, although it can be quite muddy after a hard rain. A walking path follows the entire perimeter of the pond, but can be of limited interest depending on the condition of the pond. If vegetation has grown tall along the walking path, it can be good for songbirds and has held interesting out of range eastern species in the past.

Birds of Interest

Ducks are often found on the pond in winter. Massive flocks of Yellow-headed Blackbirds roost here in winter, often numbering into the tens of thousands. These can be viewed arriving and departing from the pond at dusk and dawn, respectively.

Marsh birds such as rails and Marsh Wrens can be found in the cattails.

About this Location

A small pond, with varying amounts of cattails, depending on whether the city has cleared them out recently or not. A fire in 2022 destroyed nearly all of the riparian habitat along the edges of the pond, which historically were good for migrant songbirds.

Notable Trails

A gravel trail follows the perimeter of the pond and is about 3/4 of a mile in length.
