Minot and The Glades

Tips for Birding

This hotspot is best saved for the winter months. A spotting scope is especially helpful here to locate Purple Sandpipers on the rocks just off the shoreline, and various species of scoters and overwintering ducks.

Birds of Interest

This hotspot is a reliable place to find Purple Sandpipers and Harlequin Ducks during the winter months.

About this Location

Minot Beach is a sandy beach with beautiful views of Minot Ledge Light and Massachusetts Bay. Access is at the corner of Gannett Road and Glades Road, via a passageway on the left side of the Minot Post Office, or from two lots on Bailey’s Causeway.

The beach is named for Minots Ledge located in the ocean about a mile offshore. The rocky ledge was named for George Minot, a prominent Bostonian in the mid-1700s after one of his ships was wrecked there.

There are no trails, but you can walk along the beach for quite a distance. In the winter months, parking is available in a small lot at the intersection of Gannett Road and Glades Road (space for approximately 4 cars). Portions of this hotspot are private, do not venture past any posted private property signs.
