Nesting species include Mississippi Kite, Yellow billed Cuckoo, Common Nighthawk, Western Kingbird, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Loggerhead Shrike, and House Finch. Less common are Turkey Vulture, Greater Roadrunner, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Western Scrub-Jay, Chihuahuan Raven, Brown Thrasher, Lesser Goldfinch, and Black Vulture. Eight species of Warblers are listed on the park checklists as migrants, including MacGillivray's Warbler including 16 species of Sparrows have been recorded in winter.
Abilene State Park is about 4 miles south of Buffalo Gap on FM 89 in the low hills near the Callahan Divide. The park, a portion of which is preserved in a natural state, offers camping, screened shelters, a swimming pool with bathhouse, a one- mile hiking trail, and picnicking. The land birds of the park are most evident along the wooded sections of Elm Creek.
