Stony Brook Conservation Area

About this Location

The Stony Brook Conservation Area is made up of almost 400 acres of contiguous open space.  This property includes the East Boston Camps (EBC) known for its "Fresh Air Camp" which began in the 1930s to bring inner-city children out to the country.  Today, individuals and groups rent the cabins, dining hall, and grounds on weekends during the spring and fall.  The Marcus Lewis Day Camp and Westford Parks and Recreation Department run day camp programs during the summer months.  Even with the rentals and camp programs the trails and grounds are generally open to the public for passive recreation.

The Stony Brook River divides the property with the "Stepinski" parcels on the western side of the river.  Keyes Brook runs along the northeastern boundary and the Veteran's Memorial Complex is north of the Mass Electric utility line.  Burges Pond, a clear water pond of approximately 25 acres, is surrounded by a network of trails including a 1.75-mile pond loop trail.

The main access point to the EBC portion of Stony Brook is off Depot Street at the intersection of Depot Street, Plain Road, and the PanAm Railroad.  Parking from this entrance is 0.25 miles from Depot Street.  Access is also available from the Veteran's Memorial Complex off Farmer's Way with parking behind the Stony Brook Middle School during non-school hours.  Access to the Stepinski portion of Stony Brook is from the American Legion Fields located between 13 and 17 River Street.  Parking is available in the ball field parking lots.
