Mount Tom

About this Location

Mount Tom is part of the Metacomet Ridge, a long chain of traprock hills that extends from Connecticut to Vermont. Mount Tom is the highest peak of the ridge, reaching an elevation of 1,202 feet above sea level. The mountain offers views of the Connecticut River Valley and is a popular destination for hiking, skiing, and birdwatching. Mount Tom is home to several TV and radio stations that use its height to broadcast their signals. Mount Tom has a rich history, dating back to the 17th century when it was named by a surveyor. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was the site of an amusement park and a summit house that attracted many tourists.

Mount Tom State Reservation covers more than 2,000 acres of land. The park is located in the Connecticut River Valley, just north of Springfield. The park offers 20 miles of hiking trails for all levels of experience, as well as fishing, canoeing, and cross-country skiing on Lake Bray. The park has views of the Pioneer Valley, the Berkshire Mountains, and the Pelham Hills. 

The area is also a great place to bird watch, especially for hawks in the fall.
