Birds of Interest

One of the few sites for nesting Wilson’s Phalarope in the state. It is one of a series of lakes on the eastern New Mexico “front range” providing a migration habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds. Shorebird numbers are generally not quite reaching the threshold.

About this Location

This salt playa and surrounding wet grasslands are managed primarily by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. On the east side of the highway, the area is privately owned. Also known as Salt Lake Refuge, Wagon Mound Lake holds water from intermittent springs and surface runoff. The water supply is not dependable, and the lake varies widely in size from year to year. Waterfowl hunting is permitted in season and, with landowner permission, on nearby private lands.

Wagon Mound Wildlife Area is located about 0.5 miles northwest of Wagon Mound. Salt Lake is surrounded by high plains grasslands and bounded on three sides by a high ridge.

Wildlife watchers may see various waterfowl year-round. Good binoculars are important. The best time to view wildlife is at dawn or dusk. The best time to photograph wildlife is at dawn or dusk. A telephoto lens may be important. Hiking is the best way to see wildlife at Wagon Mound Wildlife Area year-round or in other wildlife management areas.
