Tips for Birding

Birds of Interest

In the fall and winter, several species of sparrows feed on the native vegetation. It is also a popular flyover spot for migrating raptors.

About this Location

This 50-acre parcel of land was saved from development by the Westerly Land Trust in 1998. The trust manages the land to remove exotic vegetation and to restore native grassland. Most of the fields have been restored to New England meadow wildflowers and warm-season grasses. Some have been planted with native shrubs. The salt marsh and the Pawcatuck River can be observed from South Avondale Road. People have found this Preserve to be a bird-watching and butterfly-watching hot spot.

Notable Trails

Grassland Way is a paved loop around the preserve that is commonly used for walking, jogging, bike riding, and rollerblading. The rest of the trail is mowed grass. The paved trail is plowed in the winter.. There are also a few mowed paths through the fields. The location of the paths and the types of vegetation planted varies from year to year.
