Tips for Birding

Do not park near the dikes on the road. Heed the no trespassing signs.

Typically road birding with a good variety of birds. Pull over and watch the large open areas. Be patient! The birds hunker down in the deep grass, especially Bobolinks. Bird the wet spots alongside the road. Herons and shorebirds have gotten used to the highway noise so they are not easily spooked. Once you cross the dikes you will find large Sycamore & Cottonwood which migrant species like. Over the river you will find gulls and swallows, along the shores hawks and Eagles. Sometimes I just set and watch what is moving around over the river and through the trees.

Birds of Interest

Bobolink, bobwhite, Western kingbird, Western meadowlark, dickcissel, blackbirds, oriole, shorebirds in wet areas, gulls, swallows, flycatchers, warblers, Grasshopper sparrows, vireos including Bells.

About this Location

Two main habitats prairie and riverine after you cross the dike, quite a change. The best entrance trail to Liberty Bend Conservation Area which is in Clay County. This area used to be a favorite for bird banding. The park has been cleaned up in the last few years, making it safer to bird.
