Nelson Field, Plymouth

About this Location

Nelson Field, also known as Nelson Memorial Park, has a beachfront playground with picnic tables, benches, and a large grassy area. There is a small sandy beach, plus a launch ramp for canoes and kayaks, and a paved walking trail with a direct link to the North Plymouth Rail Trail. Seasonal features include restrooms, a concessions stand, and a splash pad.

This public park was renovated in the 2010s. A portion of this land was given to the Town of Plymouth in memory of the Nelson family.

In earlier times, this land was within the region of the Patuxet, members of the Wampanoag tribe, who inhabited the area around the Jones River now known as Duxbury, Kingston, and Plymouth.

This park is located directly on the ocean and looks out across the water to Plymouth Beach. It is very common to see shorebirds here throughout the year. Look for the osprey nest in the salt marsh. The park is open and grassy, but there are also some shade trees.

Notable Trails

The Seaside Rail Trail is a 1.2-mile all-access trail extending from Nelson Field, passing Holmes Reservation, to the Cordage Park commercial area. It extends along the shoreline and offers spectacular views of a salt marsh and the ocean, as well as Plymouth Beach and Duxbury Bay. It consists alternately of pavement, concrete, and crushed stone. Stroller-friendly.
