Dresden Preserve Protected Area is a 31-acre parcel of land located on the Kennebec River, near the Lovejoy Narrows, where a 30-foot waterfall once attracted Native people for fishing and hunting. Archaeologists have found evidence of seasonal camps dating back to 9,000 years ago, making it one of the most important prehistoric sites in Maine. The preserve also has traces of a Revolutionary War-era settlement on the upper terrace, and a rare plant species called the spongy arrowhead on the lower terrace. The preserve is open to the public for hiking, birding, and wildlife watching, and offers views of the river and Little Swan Island.
The Maine By Foot website has a description and map of a hike at Dresden Preserve.
