Pioneer Forest is about 144,000 acres and is commonly known as Virgin Pine. The area is owned by the L-A-D Foundation. Virgin Pine/Shortleaf Pine-Oak Woodland: This area includes old-growth shortleaf pine trees scattered within a larger shortleaf pine-oak woodland restoration unit. The habitat includes an overstory dominated by shortleaf pine and oak. The reintroduction of fire and thinning has created more widely-spaced trees with an open understory. The ground cover includes a diversity of native grasses, forbs, and shrubs.
