Sabino Segura River Levee Park (Rio Grande)

Sunland Park, New Mexico 88063

About this Location

The Sabino Segura River Levee Park is located along the Rio Grande in Sunland Park and offers a rich birding experience due to the year-round presence of water. Fall and spring are the best times of year to view a variety of waterfowl and shorebirds.

The park is accessed from Racetrack Drive; turn onto the levee road just north of the bridge and park in the large dirt lot below the levee. There is no signage or posted hours. From here, you can hike either west or east of the bridge to view the Rio Grande riverbed.

The year-round flow of effluent-treated water at this location is a significant draw for local birds. From fall to spring, expect Least Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher, Black-necked Stilt, Great and Snowy Egrets, and a variety of dabbling ducks. Migration may bring other shorebirds, as well as various warblers and other migrant passerines. The best bird activity is often right around the bridge, though there can be good numbers of birds farther west along the river as well. Birding can be productive here at any time of day, though the early morning is usually best; the arrival of dog-walkers and joggers later in the day may flush the shier species.
