A Birders' Guide to Drover's Prairie CA

Birds of Interest

As with other small prairie hotspots in the area, birding reports are clustered April through June, with few other visits.  Henslow’s, Grasshopper and Field Sparrows are likely in this period.  Northern Bobwhite occurs.  Dickcissel and Common Yellowthroat dominate the scene through summer.  The single report for December at this writing includes Barred Owl, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Lapland Longspur, Brewer’s Blackbird, Northern Harrier, and Bald Eagle.  This site begs to be birded in winter!

Greater Prairie-Chicken (4) were last reported on the recently burned prairie on April 18, 1998.

About this Location

From Sedalia, go south on US 65 10 miles, then west on MO 52 for 0.75 miles, then left onto Hoffman Road. The northeast corner of the property is at this point.

This area has been designated by Audubon Missouri as an Important Bird Area (IBA).  It is also a site on the Great Missouri Birding Trail http://greatmissouribirdingtrail.com/Wordpress/birding-trails/columbia/index-central-region-birding-trail/drovers-prairie-conservation-area/ .

MDC uses prescribed fire, mowing, and other practices to maintain a healthy native grassland which includes a prairie swale, some bottomland prairie, and a short section of a headwater stream.

The site consists of two 40-acre segments.  The parking lot is at the southeast corner of the northeastern segment.  A two-track leads along the fence line from the lot west to a gate into the other segment.
