A Birders' Guide to Grandfather Prairie CA

Birds of Interest

In summer, this is a good place to find Henslow’s, Grasshopper, and Field Sparrow, Yellow-breasted Chat, Eastern Meadowlark, Orchard and Baltimore Oriole, Common Yellowthroat, and Blue Grosbeak. Bobolinks have been seen in July. Barn Owl has been observed (there are two boxes). The paucity of reports for the remainder of the year leaves an open opportunity for adventurous birders to add occurrence data.

About this Location

From Sedalia, go south 8 miles on US 65, then west 2 miles on Mather Road.
This area has been designated by Audubon Missouri as an Important Bird Area (IBA).

MDC acquired this dry-mesic chert 80-acre native prairie remnant named after the Osage Indians' name for the sun in 1987. Fritillary butterflies, and pink katydids occur.
The area map shows only a parking area at the southeast corner, with no apparent access into the heart of the area, but farther to the west on Mather Rd. is an unmaintained gravel road leading into the area and ending atop the imploded Minuteman Missile silo site. This vantage point offers easy viewing and listening for the inhabitants of the surrounding prairie.
