Henslow’s and Grasshopper sparrows, Bobolink, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Bell’s Vireo and Sedge Wren have been detected in spring and summer months. Short-eared Owl and Northern Harrier were seen in January, 2023, suggesting that winter visits could be very productive. The last Greater Prairie-Chicken reported here was in April, 1978.
From Sedalia, go south on US 65 9 miles, then west (right) on Manila Road 1.5 miles.
In 1969, Friendly Prairie, a remnant dry-mesic chert prairie, was the Missouri Prairie Foundation’s first purchase. MDC assumed management responsibilities in 1977. The name comes from the site’s early use as a resting stop by travelers.
305 native plant species, including the federally threatened Mead’s milkweed (Asclepias meadii), and four state-listed species of conservation concern have been found here.
Unmaintained foot paths from the parking area at the southwest corner are the only access to the interior.
