Tips for Birding

The city reservoir is not open to drive-in or drive around.

But it is possible to pull into the gate and park there temporarily to bird from the gate area.

The reservoir runs in a generally northeast to southwest direction with the highway and gate on the northern end of the reservoir.

In the winter months, one would be looking south into the sun in the middle of the day. Take that into consideration when timing a birding trip.

It’s probably worth stopping in and parking at the gate and spending a little time in case waterfowl are loafing next to the shoreline closest to the highway.

If they are, and given a little bit of time and noise to alert them to the presence of people, the waterfowl might swim out from underneath the embankment so they can be seen.

It would also be good to check out the trees in the yard of the house across the street from the reservoir. These trees have been quite birdy on at least two visits to the reservoir.
