Bitterwater Road King City, California
The eroded cliff above the San Lorenzo River, about 5 miles upstream from King City, was the nesting habitat of a colony of Bank Swallow from at least 1996 to 2018. Colony size varied from 10-100, depending on conditions, under it was abandoned. The land and access road are all private property, but birders got permission for annual surveys. Now that the colony is gone, there is no public access.
The historic colony of Bank Swallow, nesting with Northern Rough-winged and Cliff Swallows, was the last known colony in the interior of Monterey County. Another colony existed along Metz Road, just about a mile away as the swallow flies, from at least the 1960s to 1998, when that cliff-face crumbled due to erosion. Barn Owl roost (and likely nests) in some of the bigger holes in the cliff.
