Pigeon Lake--Back Channel

Pigeon Lake--Back Channel

Tips for Birding

The only option for viewing at this hotspot is to scan from the boat ramp at the north end of Bear Creek Rd. A spotting scope is highly recommended for this location, as the waterfowl can often be somewhat distant. Note that the rocks along the shore are often slippery.

Birds of Interest

More than a dozen species of waterfowl have been observed at this location. The woods surrounding the boat launch can be productive for passerine migrants and local breeders.

About this Location

The Back Channel is best known for its concentrations of waterfowl during migration, particularly in spring. Currents in the channel help to keep it ice-free longer in the fall and promote an earlier breakup in the spring. Given its sheltered location waterfowl are attracted to its relatively quiet waters during strong west and northwest winds.

The closest access is the municipal boat launch ramp at the north end of Bear Creek Rd. The boat ramp is crude and suitable only for launching small boats, canoes, or kayaks. There is limited parking available at the north end of Bear Creek Rd. Please be sure not to block driveways and to respect the adjacent landowners' privacy.
