Tips for Birding

If your natural history interests are mixed with human history then this is your place. The grounds of the fort are rather expansive with just the restored fort alone. But also behind and above the fort are almost 4 miles of trails. One of the hidden gems to bird here is Hospital Canyon. After you pay your entrance fee, or you might have an Annual Pass they will suggest you get to Hospital Canyon via the Hospital Canyon Trail, which is fine. But the Service Road is really better as it goes up the canyon between a steep hill side and the creek wash coming down the canyon. Plus you will have more larger oaks and hackberries. The habitat here can be similar to Davis Mountains State Park, but there are hardly ever any people venturing back in this canyon, so it's quiet and can be rather birdy. Also on the north side you can go out Cemetery Trail and return on Historic San Antonio-El Paso Road. This is a good location for open scrub birds. Plus Wild Turkey often are found near TX-118 on this side. You'll obviously notice the huge cottonwoods as you drive into the park. You'll also see signs warning you to keep out as the large limbs of these ancient trees may come down. That being said, a walk around the edges may still get you views or at least within ear shot of Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Orchard Oriole or Summer Tanager.

Birds of Interest

Scaled Quail, Montezuma Quail, Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Greater Roadrunner, Zone-tailed Hawk, Acorn Woodpecker,

About this Location

A vital strategic military post from 1854-1891 to protect pioneers, travelers and freight shipping via wagon trains on the San Antonio-El Paso Road and the Chihuahua Trail in the early southwestern United States. Also known as a main post for the historically significant Buffalo Soldiers. There is a museum inside the Visitor's Center, completely restored Officer Quarters, partially restored barracks and hospital. With the main fort grounds and the surrounding trails, you could easily spend two days at the fort. If you stay on the north side of Fort Davis, you can actually walk to the pedestrian gate on the edge of town. Also the trails system connects to the Davis Mountains State Park. So you can actually plan a hike from the fort to the State Park or visa versa.

Notable Trails

Hospital Canyon Trail: lower canyon birds. Cemetery Trail & Historic San Antonio-El Paso Road: Scrubby specialties such as sparrows.
