Pinery PP--Old Ausable Channel

Tips for Birding

During boating season, travel by canoe or kayak and launch from the bridge at the Riverside Campground/Park Store area. From October through April, watch and listen for passing birds from the docks on either side of the Camp Store bridge. You can watch from the bridge but stay behind the guard rail for safety.

Birds of Interest

Ducks, geese, swans, loons, raptors and songbirds. Winter finches and both waxwings are possible during eruption years.

About this Location

The Old Ausable Channel divides the Pinery into two halves. A few trails offer access to viewing platforms and three bridges cross the Channel within the Park. The water is generally calm and ideal for travel by canoe or kayak. The Channel will freeze early in the winter and stay frozen longer than the nearby Ausable River.
