Tips for Birding

The birding at Saquatucket Harbor is best in the winter when many types of ducks can be found. You can park and walk along the edge of the harbor, or you can drive along the water. There should be little other traffic off-season.  If you're driving, you'll pull into the lot and drive straight toward the water. Check the creek that comes from the right, winding behind Brax Landing. Looking ahead you can see the jetties at the harbor entrance. Ducks and geese like to hide in the grasses on the right, but this is the most productive stretch of water. After a thorough check, you can look between the docks and moorings as you drive toward the boat ramp. Beyond the boat ramp, you can pull off to the right and check the east side of the harbor.  In the past Green-winged Teal, Long-tailed Ducks, Northern Shovelers, Scaup, and Scoter have been found.  Be aware that since the ferry to Nantucket departs from here in the summer, most summer lists from this location are actually from out over the waters of the sound.

About this Location

Saquatucket Harbor is the port for the Nantucket-Harwich ferry. The ferry runs only during the summer.  Commercial and sports anglers, as well as other recreational boaters, use the harbor much more into the shoulder seasons. There is a restaurant right at the harbor, open mainly during tourist season.
