Kansas City, Missouri 64131

Birds of Interest

The shallow wetland area attracts waterfowl during spring and fall migration.

About this Location

Alex George Lake (recently renamed Alex George Wetland) is accessed from a parking lot on Blue River Road 0.5 mile north of Red Bridge Road. It is an eight-acre shallow water reservoir which drains over a crumbling concrete dam. At the parking lot there is a picnic area and mowed area which provides access to the north shoreline for waterfowl viewing. The west side of the lake is accessible via a paved spur to the Blue River hike and bike trail. The west side also provides waterfowl viewing. A map of the Blue River Parkway county park is available at https://www.makeyourdayhere.com/files/assets/parksrec/facilities/documents/blue-river-parkway-map-2022.pdf.

Notable Trails

A paved spur to the Blue River Trail runs from the parking lot 1/3 mile around the south side of the lake and ends at the west side of the lake, where it intersects Blue River Trail. At the trail junction there is a picnic table and elevated viewing spot to see waterfowl on the lake. From the trail junction, turn left to go to Minor Park or continue straight to follow the Blue River Trail north to the Blue River Athletic Fields city park and eventually three miles along Blue River to 95th Terrace. Two mountain bicycle trails begin across from the parking lot on the east side of Blue River Road and ascend a rocky bluff. They both terminate at the junction of Blue River Road and Chestnut Drive, north of the parking lot for Alex George Wetland.
