About this Location

As part of the Blue Springs Lake ecosystem this area has been a must visit area when birding the lake, even before the lake was built. The list you see here is really incomplete, since this area was not considered a hotspot earlier. Birded by several well known veteran birders in the 1970,s it was introduced to me as the place to go for Night-heron’s which nested here. Season specific visits during spring and fall produce migratory species. Winter birding yields a large variety of ducks and most significant! Long eared Owl. The Jackson County Parks Department has allowed lake to deteriorate, specifically the spillway so the water level is at least three feet lower than it used to be. It is still worth a visit during the times I mentioned. Prairie, old growth woodlands and marshland still exist as well as some unique rock structures alongside the lake. Who knows you might still see a Long eared Owl in the cedars south of the lake.
