Birds of Interest

Only 17 distinct trips, beginning in June 2015, have been entered into eBird since the prairie was opened to the public.

The 68 species detected as of summer of 2023 include wintering American Tree, Fox, White-throated, and Song Sparrow and Dark-eyed Junco, as well as Eastern Screech-Owl, Great Horned and Barred Owl, Northern Mockingbird, Carolina Wren, and White-breasted Nuthatch.

Spring and summer finds include Northern Bobwhite, Red-bellied and Downy Woodpecker, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Kingbird, Great Crested Flycatcher, and Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, White-eyed and Bell’s Vireo, Loggerhead Shrike, Field Sparrow, Eastern Meadowlark, Eastern Towhee and Yellow-breasted Chat. One October trip recorded House, Sedge and Marsh Wren, along with White-crowned, White-throated, Song, Lincoln’s, and Swamp Sparrow.

About this Location

In Hickory County go east from Cross Timbers approximately 5 miles on Rt. P (a.k.a. Carson St.), or from Preston on US 54 go north on Rt. F, to the southeast corner of the intersection of Rt. P and Rt. F. Parking is available on the grass entrance along Rt. P. The prairie was donated to MPF from the estate of Ann Louise Stark in 2013.

Most of the 34 acres is dry-mesic prairie, including a portion of a headwater stream and a prairie swale. There are five acres of native woodland.

MPF’s Citizen Science Biodiversity Project is a program to enhance understanding of species diversity on the 30 tracts owned and managed by MPF and open to the public. MPF encourages visitors to use iNaturalist to submit observations to add to data used for management decisions.
