Tips for Birding

During migration or winter, check the line of Eucalyptus trees along the western park boundary for songbirds. This site has often been host to rare migrant birds, especially in fall. The light conditions are best for scanning the Eucalyptus during sunny mornings.

A broken water fountain, which is the only water in the park, seems to attract extra activity (34.449013, -119.845670).

Phainopepla occasionally pass through the park, often using the large live oaks.

Mornings during weekdays tend to be the least busy. Weekends draw crowds for picnics and barbeques, particularly later in the day.

Birds of Interest

Phainopepla, migratory songbirds. Lerpy eucalyptus can attract rare birds in fall.

About this Location

Stow Grove Park is a Goleta city park which features a playground, several picnic tables, and outdoor grilling areas. Space at a table or grill can be reserved in advance from the City of Goleta Website

Notable habitat features include a line of lerp-infested blue gum Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) along the western boundary of the park, a grove of redwoods (regularly irrigated with sprinklers) to the north, and a mixture of large live oaks, non-native flowering trees (Brachychiton sp.), and grassy lawns to the south.

This park is popular for dog-walkers, families with children, and barbeque parties, so it can be busy during peak hours on weekends.

There is a parking lot at the north end of the site which has free parking all day. Most trails through the park are level, unpaved dirt.

There is a permanent bathroom with flush toilets north of the parking lot (34.450050, -119.846184). A separate port-o-potty bathroom is located just south of the parking area (34.448478, -119.846136).
