Tips for Birding

Lollie Road and its arteries offer birders many places to search for birds. The agricultural fields and the grounds circling the airport are the areas of greatest focus, particularly during winter and spring/fall migration. The agricultural fields are not accessible but the main paved and gravel roads are public and are wide enough to pull over, leaving room for large trucks to pass.

Birds of Interest

WINTER: Sparrows are abundant, and this is a good area in Central Arkansas to find a Harris's or a Vesper Sparrow. Pipits and Lapland Longspurs can also be found in the fields but require effort. Meadowlarks are frequently seen or heard with an occasional Western singing in the flock. Geese and ducks are frequent visitors and a scope is beneficial to identify them. Harriers and occasionally a Short-eared Owl winter here. There are several Bald Eagle nests around the property and can be seen from the main road. Other common raptors include Cooper's Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk (including Harlan's) and Merlin.

MIGRATION: Shorebirds and warblers can be found in their appropriate habitats. Flooded fields can attract an abundance of shorebirds, and Sugarberry trees attract warblers. Swainson's Hawk has visited the area, flying over the fields. Bobolinks and Yellow-headed Blackbirds also feed along the fields about a mile or more past the airport.

SUMMER: One of the most sought-after species here in summer is the Painted Bunting which breeds in various sections along Lollie Rd. Other birds of interest are Red-headed Woodpecker, Barred Owl and an occasional Loggerhead Shrike.
