Big Pines camp was a small rustic trail camp, located at 3,400' elevation (1036 m), on the Ventana Double Cone Trail (2E04) in the Ventana Wilderness. It is now closed and may never reopen. eBird data is historic data only.
The location was surveyed for summer forest breeders and owls during Monterey's breeding bird atlas. It was good for birds then (1988-1992) but 21st century burns have destoyed the Ponderosa Pine forest.
In 2012, the status was described on "AllTrails" as "The Big Pines Trail was once a shaded trail through a beautiful Ponderosa forest with a wonderful camp on Danish Creek. In 2008 lightning started the Basin Fire which burned very hot in Big Pines and killed most of the Ponderosa Pines and has made the area unsafe for camping due to dead tree hazards. Big Pines Camp is overgrown and no longer a campsite. The trail was re-opened in 2011 by the Ventana Wilderness Alliance but dead trees will be falling for the next thirty years so you will need to check the Ventana Wilderness Alliance web page for current trail conditions. It is not recommended to hike this trail during high winds or to camp anywhere among the dead trees; Pat Springs Camp is a good alternative campsite to Big Pines Camp about one mile from Big Pines Camp. The walk is about 8.5 miles from Los Padres Dam."
In 2016, this status update was posted: "The Trail was totally destroyed in the 2016 wildfire! Refer to the Ventana Wilderness Alliance site for further details, but it will be years before the trail will be restored due to its limited popularity."
And in 2020, the entire Big Pines trail and surrounding Los Padres National Forest was closed after more wildfires and storm erosion.
