Trailhead is at Gate 5 on NM-4. There are a few parking spots at this location.

The western portion is easy and mildly downhill. The eastern portion is more difficult as it climbs out of Water Canyon, over Ruin Mesa, and down into Potrillo Canyon through basalt, tuff, and loose gravel.
