Great Blue Hill

About this Location

Great Blue Hill is the highest point in the Blue Hills Reservation. The hill is named for the bluish hue of its exposed granite slopes, which offer panoramic views of the Boston skyline and the surrounding landscape. The hill is also home to the Blue Hill Observatory, the oldest continuously operating weather station in the United States. The observatory was founded in 1885 by Abbott Lawrence Rotch, a Harvard meteorologist who wanted to study the atmospheric conditions at high altitudes. The observatory is still active today, conducting research and education programs on climate change and weather phenomena. Great Blue Hill is a popular destination for hikers, bikers, and nature lovers.
