About this Location

Wagon Hill Farm is a 139-acre property owned by the Town of Durham, located 3 miles east of downtown along US-4. A historic wooden wagon at the top of the hill, overlooking the highway, is a local landmark recognized far and wide among Seacoast residents, UNH students, and tourists alike. The property was acquired by the town in 1989 “to preserve its scenic vistas, provide for future municipal purposes and preserve open space in order to provide a healthful and attractive outdoor environment for work and recreation, and to conserve land, water, forest and wildlife resources.”

The property has a small public parking area (12 cars), a portable toilet, and a variety of trails, and is open from 8 a.m. to dusk. Popular activities include walking, kayaking, dog-walking, and sledding and snowshoeing in the winter. Summer concerts, the annual Durham Day festival, weddings, and picnics are all held at this special town site.

The property includes a mowed shoreline overlooking Great Bay with a small sandy beach, along with many acres of grassland habitats, mowed trails, oak forests, old apple orchards, and over 60 community garden plots that have been added since 2009.
