Tips for Birding

This Hot Spot provides easy public access to the rocky shoreline of Monterey Bay from Otter Point to Lovers Point, via trails in the nearly mile-long Perkins Park.

Birds of Interest

Search for resident birds of the rocky shore throughout the year — including the common Brandt's and Pelagic Cormorants and a few Double-crested Cormorants — plus Black Oystercatchers. In fall, winter, and early spring, watching for obligate rocky-shore waders, including Black Turnstone, Surfbird, Wandering Tattler (now a scarce migrant only), and other shorebirds like Willet, Black-bellied Plover, Spotted Sandpiper, and Ruddy Turnstone (scarce). Sea-ducks (mostly Surf Scoter), and a variety of grebes, loons, and gulls are here in winter, while Brown Pelican and Elegant Terns are typically summer and fall visitors. Brant occur sparingly in migration, and pelagic seabirds may be blown close to shore during storms or strong northwest winds. In spring and fall, migrant landbirds and (sometimes) vagrants will appear in Candelabra Aloe Vera plants in Perkins Park, or in the small patch of willows at the beach at the foot of Sea Palm Avenue.

About this Location

The nearly mile-long Perkins Park stretches along the Pacific Grove rocky shoreline from Lovers Point westwards to Otter Point (the latter is a separate Seawatch hot spot meant for stationary seawatching counts). There is parking at Lovers Point, at the curve in Ocean View Boulevard at the foot of Sea Palm Avenue, and at Otter Point. Bathroom facilities are at Lovers Point.

In the late 19th Century, Pacific Grove began as a Methodist Retreat community; Lovers Point was then called "Lovers of Jesus Point."  Lovers Point continues to be used as a cold-water bathing location at the sandy beach at the foot of 17th Avenue, and various community events, including a "Feast of Lanterns" celebration and (at least in the past) fireworks displays.

The small wooded park at the northeast corner of Jewell Avenue and 17th Street, called Chase Park, is also a part of this Hot Spot.

Notable Trails

The paved, wide Monterey Bay Coastal Trail begins at Ocean View Boulevard and 17th Street, at the south end of Lovers Point, and continues east to Fishermans Wharf in Monterey and beyond. It is hiking/biking/ADA accessible trail but it is very popular with bikers (some of them riding very fast) and runners, as well as those in peddled rental vehicles and walkers. The paved trail has wide gravel edges to move over when confronted with fast cyclists.

From Lovers Point westward, gravel and dirt walking trails skirt the shoreline, and become a set of trails in Perkins Park near Otter Point. These are popular walking and jogging trails, but are not ADA accessible.
