Tips for Birding

The public may visit Pt. Sur Lighthouse only via tours that are offered once or twice a week, depending on the season and the weather — see the Pt. Sur State Historic Park link above. It is a lovely spot to visit in good weather, but can be windy or cold, but the tour with focus on the historic buildings and the Lighthouse. There are comparative few birds resident on the Point, but for cormorants and oystercatchers on the ocean shore, plus a few landbirds (White-crowned Sparrow, Bewick's Wren). Birders with permission regularly seawatch from here for the Pt. Sur Christmas Bird Count, but seawatching on tours would require carrying a scope, if permitted by the tour leader, which is a fair bit of work (one must walk uphill to the top on tours).

Birds of Interest

Peregrine Falcons sit atop the towers at the top of Pt. Sur.  Migration of Brant geese in April can be viewed with binoculars during tours.
