Tips for Birding

There are lakes on the east side of the I-35 frontage road south of the La Bonita Road intersection that should be checked for waterbirds, including Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks.

Luckily, the frontage road is two-way here so one can drive south or north, though driving north to take advantage of the shoulder and put the ponds on the passenger side of the car might be a good idea.

Be aware of the direction of the sun and maybe plan your visit accordingly.

After turning onto La Bonita Road, one is mostly driving east-west so the sun angle should be better. One can change driving direction, though, to take advantage of putting the sun to one's back, too, depending on the time of day.

There is a bridge on the frontage road north of the La Bonita Road intersection that can be very productive for waterfowl and sandpipers/shorebirds. Consider parking on the shoulder and walking up to the pond but be very aware of soil conditions and don't get stuck in the mud on the shoulder after a rain.
