Kescayo Gansett Town Landing

Kescayo Gansett Town Landing

Herring Brook Way Orleans, Massachusetts 02653

Tips for Birding

The saltwater pond is fairly small and easily viewable with binoculars from the town landing, although a scope can help if ducks are on the far side or near the tidal creek flowing to Little Pleasant Bay.  The thickets and shrubs on the north side are sometimes good for songbirds, but it is a small area.  Bald Eagles, Ospreys, and Red-tailed Hawks can be seen.  Belted Kingfishers seem to be omnipresent, listen for them, or scan the docks for perched birds.  The stars of the show are winter ducks, including Buffleheads, Red-breasted and Hooded Mergansers, Common and rarely Barrow's Goldeneyes, Mallards, and Black Ducks.  Lots of duck possibilities and easily scanned in just a couple of minutes.

Birds of Interest

Belted Kingfisher, Great Blue Heron, ducks

About this Location

Kescayo Gansett Pond, also known as Lonnie’s Pond, is a five-acre saltwater estuary off of Pleasant Bay accessible from Herring Brook Way.

There are two landings on the pond. The town landing on Herring Brook Way is paved with parking for 4-5 cars. The second landing is on Herring Run.

Notable Trails

The eastern shore of the pond is accessible from Kents Point, but the trails are not well marked.  Kents Point is incredibly popular with dog owners, but the spur that leads to Lonnie's Pond is unfrequented.
